This role will be responsible for defining and executing the quality strategy, ensuring the delivery of high-performing, secure, and reliable applications/systems. The Director will report into the Information Technology (IT) Delivery organization, which is broadly responsible for technical delivery of the systems that support DIRECTV’s customers, partners, and employees.

DIRECTV is investing heavily in technology transformation, modernizing our applications, and building independence from shared systems. This role is an important leadership position that will ensure continuity of service for our existing technology stack while also influencing the direction we take in the future. The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience managing hybrid internal and outsource software delivery teams in a virtual environment, and a track record of success in doing so.

Here’s what you’ll do:

  • Build, lead, and mentor a high-performing Quality Engineering (QE) team across multiple geographies.
  • Define and implement the overall quality engineering strategy, including test automation, non-functional testing, and CI/CD quality gates.
  • Own and evolve test frameworks, tools, and metrics to support release quality at scale.
  • Collaborate closely with software engineering and product management to ensure quality is built into the product lifecycle from requirements to production.
  • Lead efforts for root cause analysis, defect prevention, and continuous improvement processes.
  • Drive test coverage for functional, performance, security, and regression testing.
  • Partner with DevOps and SRE teams to maintain robust testing in CI/CD pipelines.
  • Develop and track KPIs, quality dashboards, and reporting to ensure transparency and accountability.
  • Champion quality best practices, including risk-based testing, shift-left testing, and test data management.
  • Manage vendor relationships and third-party testing services where appropriate.

What you’ll need to be successful:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
  • 5 – 7+ years required, 10+ years preferred experience in software quality engineering or test engineering, with at least 5 years in a leadership capacity.
  • Proven track record of scaling QA/QE organizations in fast-paced, Agile environments.
  • Deep knowledge of modern test automation frameworks and tools (e.g., Selenium, Playwright, Cypress, TestNG, etc.).
  • Strong understanding of software development and testing methodologies (Agile, Scrum, DevOps).
  • Experience with performance and security testing tools (e.g., JMeter, Gatling, OWASP ZAP).
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive quality culture and process improvements across teams.
  • Experience with containerized environments (Docker, Kubernetes) and cloud-native applications.
  • Experience managing QE teams across multiple locations and time zones.
